Holy moly that’s a strong beer.

Highest one I have ever had was Tokyo from Brewdog. That one was 18.2 abv. Brewdog is know for having done very high abv beer over the years. I’ve always wanted to try Utopias from Sam Adams (29% last I checked) but it’s insanely expensive and hard to get. That one you’ve got sounds really good.

Yeah, I’m a huge fan of strong ales and stouts, but this is about 4% stronger than anything else I’ve had. I’ll be curious to see if that overpowers the overall flavor too much.

Ooo, you’ve just given me a few more to add to the list! I was randomly given a taste of an earlier Avery barrel aged offering about a year ago that was delicious. This is the first bottle I’ve found since then, so I’m hoping it lives up to the high standard it set in my memory.

Dogfish Head has a few super-high ABV beers like that. Higher Math is 17%, 120 Minute IPA is 18%, and Fort is 20%. I’ve had Fort and Higher Math, and both are overwhelmingly alcohol-flavored.

Utopias is interesting, the flavor is somewhere between bourbon and brandy.

Did you have to go to Boulder to find it? I’m probably gonna get a relative a 6 5 of them for Christmas

Funny enough, found it in some random bottleshop in rural PA. Haven’t even been able to find it in Portland, but there it was just sitting in one of the shop’s coolers.

Damn. Stuff’s made 40 miles from where I am and it’s pretty much only available at the brewery. Whoever works there must know somebody, lol.

Yeah the only other time I’d seen it (and the only reason I’d heard about the brand) was from a friend who was coming back from a cross country road trip that took him through Boulder. He said the same, that they basically only sell stuff directly.

Good deal. I’m a beer dork. I’m somewhere over 400 by now on different ones i have tried. I’m fun at parties, dontcha know.

Do they sell Abita where you live? They also have a really good barrel aged coffee stout, though it is only 10%.

That’s what I have heard. No head, very boozy, not so much a beer as it is an experiment in the limits of beer making.

I’ve had quite a number as well, probably not that high, but I’ve got a good 150 or so empty bottles saved of beers I’ve liked (only just recently started using untapped). I’ll have to look, but sadly the northwest is pretty dry for good darks, it’s all about the IPAs here.

They use special genetically modified yeast that can survive the high alcohol levels, and in recent runs they’ve pushed it even more by adding maple syrup to the wort, providing more fermentable sugar.

Have you been over to loyal legion or cascade brewing in SE?

Have not been to loyal legion, but love cascade! One of the first places I bring guys from out of town, that and hair of the dog.

Loyal legion is excellent, tons of beer on tap and the taps are always changing.

Raccoon lodge on Beaverton Hillsdale has cascade stuff, well, it is a cascade location. But on our side of town.

Haven’t been to hair of the dog. Need to.

Right on! I’ll check out both. My normal taphouse is 649, but looks like it is about a quarter the size of loyal legion.

Haven’t even heard of that one! Green Dragon is also worth checking out. Just had a cherry habanero stout there the other night. Nice kick and decent flavor.

Cherry habanero, that sounds like an interesting one! I’ll have to check that out as well.

Ah yeah. Dogfish Head and such are huge out there I imagine. We have Terrapin down here and they are known for very hoppy brews. I’ve never been a huge IPA fan though. Porters and stouts are where it’s at for me along with Trappist style.

Interesting, didn’t know about the syrup part. I know they have gradually climbed a little bit higher on abv. I think it was around 25 or so when they started producing it.

Dogfish head isn’t as popular as your expect. We have a crap ton of local breweries. Deschutes and Widmer are probably the most easily accessible everywhere, but there is a brewpub on just about every other corner in Portland.

But yeah I’m right there with you on stouts and porters, well done ones have similar depth and flavor profile to my real drink if choice, scotch.

Yeah, their yeast proved strong enough that it was still alive after converting all the malt sugars. So they kept going.

HOLY NECROPOST BATMAN- I managed to get a hold of some around new years day and it was amazing- I couldn’t beleive they could make such a boozy beer so drinkable and sweet

Actually since then I finally annoyed the local bottle shop in to offering a limited selection of their brews. Haven’t had one that disappoints yet.
